Best Woof about Bulgaria: Popping balloons!
Worst yelp about the Bulgaria: Too many strays without enough say!
Getting to Bulgaria entailed my very first 'Bark Voyage' on a train! The sounds were irritating, but nothing is as bad as those bangs on the door for my passport control! Aaarg…
My day with The Bulgarian Society for Animal Protection and Preservation (BSAPP) kicked off with meeting Radostina Galitonova at the Ecoravnovesie headquarters. She and Dr Naydenov, are the hot dogs that support BSAPP with the spay-neuter-return programs in Sofia- very vital business because there are thousands of stray dogs in and around the capital city. After that yap we all boarded the Woof Bus and proceeded to the BSAPP shelter. I was met by my all time favorite things - BALLOONS! Pop goes the decorations, and there were hundreds! While the volunteers of the shelter selected the 'Oscar', I exploded everyone in my way. There was even a welcome banner just for me when I arrived and that too, was fully destroyed in the quest to annihilate the last remaining balloon in my pooch path! Sorry guys...and thank you for all the other creative banners you made for me!!
The BSAPP shelter is by far the smallest shelter I've ever seen - only 14 dogs call this Home, Sweet Temporary Home' - which is quite a contrast from the 2500 dogs I met the day before at Yedicule in Istanbul! Phew...things can change so fast.
Later, I headed up to the American College of Sofia in Mladost and met with the students from the American College of Sofia’s Animal Protection Club in the most magnificent sniffing territory ever known to my nose. The Anglo American School followed, and my nose traded grass fields for vanilla icing and sponge cake. My diet is going to the dogs, but how could I not show my appreciation to The Students and Teachers for Animal Rights organization for cooking up such a storm. The day rounded off at South Park where stray dogs meet the spoilt dogs. The woof bus swerved me home to my duvet and down pillow. I slept like a log! Tomorrow it’s Ruff Ruff Puff to Romania…!
A special yap of thanks to Jennifer Kudashov of BSAPP who arranged the day’s activities - as well as to Tom Sadowski and all the volunteers who made all the welcome signs for me. Your team rocks – Go Ex Pats! Sorry for destroying all the balloons, but I couldn’t leave Bulgaria without a bang!
