Best bark About Nepal: The Doggie Diva taking photo’s with the Shiva’s – and monkeys inbetween…
Worst Bark about Nepal: Too cloudy to mount Mutt Everest!
Think of Kathmandu and there’s so much to chase! Monkey temple with MONEYS, mountains with YAKS, and…best of all, there’s an organization that sounds like the very things that I love to chase –KAT! But before visiting the most pro-active dog welfare organization in the whole of Nepal, I took a moment to board a big bold elephant. It was the very first time that an Oscar had ever woofed through Chitwan National Park and the Great One horned Rhino’s couldn’t yelp but be amused! A few barks on board the big fellow and we were speeding through the jungle at zero point one meters an hour.
A few days later, I was chasing every monkey and moving object in the mystic capital of Kathmandu! What a place and what a pleasure to eventually meet the one and only Jan Salter. Born in Britain and inspired by the canines of Kathmandu, she’s lived most of the last 40 years between the two ‘towns’ and she’s done more for dogs out here than the prayer flags have done for peace. It was only about 7 years ago when Jan finally decided to give up her cash and establish a center that could improve the dreaded state of street dogs that haunted her through all here previous visits in Nepal. Everyone thought she was nuts, but nuts never changed the world; actions and Jan do! Meet Jan, hear her roar with enthusiastic laughter and you’ll soon see why KAT has transformed the case for dog welfare in the capital city. Today the KAT center works in conjunction with the very governmental authorities that used to poison the street dogs in the city and have implemented one of the most effective spay and neuter campaigns in its history. The 13 staff organization specifically called a center and not a shelter, actively adopt out approximately 5 dogs a month with is more than 50% of those that are available for homing. The Center also serves as a treatment center for sick dogs as well as a center to educate the public about the importance of sterilization and basics of ‘Woof Welfare’. I got to meet ‘Mango’, KAT’s infamous mascot – it’s hard to believe that such a stunning dog used to look like such a pathetically sad and hairless specimen. You see, with a bit of love and care, a life can be transformed and Mango’s miracle is one of many that you will witness here at KAT – just ask Lucy, Gaida, Beauty, Sherab and Taxi!
I must also add that besides the green grass of the stunning Samsara Resort, KAT’s beautiful green scene as you enter the center makes it a great place to visit and to leave your cash flow. A special bark of thanks to Jan, Anil (KAT Manager), Prerna and the entire friendly team at KAT for making our day with you so marvelous. Then to Mr. Dhakal and his team at the Samsara Resort in Kathmandu and Mr. Hari and his fantastic team at the Jungle Safari Resort in Chitwan – your generous support of this Tour is greatly appreciated and off the record I have to say that your locations and accommodations beat anything that I’ve ever sniffed out on my previous visits in Kathmandu - A paradise for this pooch; a dream for my dame! Lastly, to Puru Timalsena, Managing Director of The Himalaya Trekking Co… what can I bark? I met Puru a few years back on a visit to Kathmandu and he organized the greatest adventure in the mountains that you could ever imagine. On this occasion, Nepal’s ‘Top Dog’ once again went out his very busy way to make sure that I would miss him and his highly organized plans before I even left! Thank you Puru – you are a legend in a legendary land and I appreciate your truly sincere and humble demeanor and absolute professionalism where everything and anything is ‘NO PROBLEM!!’ at all for you to arrange… Thank you so muttch!
